Geelong’s beloved Irish import, Zach Tuohy, has announced his decision to retire at the conclusion of the 2024 AFL season, marking the end of an extraordinary career spanning two clubs and solidifying his legacy as one of the most successful international players in AFL history.
Originally from Portlaoise in County Laois, Ireland, Tuohy’s remarkable journey began when he attracted the attention of AFL recruiters in 2009. In 2010, he was drafted by Carlton as an International Rookie with the 73rd pick in the rookie draft. After playing 120 games with the Blues, Tuohy was traded to Geelong at the end of 2016, where he debuted for the Cats in Round 1 of the 2017 season against Fremantle.
Over eight stellar seasons with Geelong, Tuohy has appeared in 166 games and was a key member of the 2022 Premiership-winning team—a match that also saw him celebrate his 250th career game. Known for his resilience, skill, and signature torpedo kicks, Tuohy is cherished by the Geelong faithful. His iconic moustache and post-win “Reggie wave” to the Reg Hickey Stand have become beloved fixtures at GMHBA Stadium.
Tuohy, 34, will finish his career as the all-time games record holder for Irish-born players in the AFL. He surpassed the legendary Jim Stynes in 2023, when he played his 265th game against North Melbourne. He now stands as a modern-day trailblazer for aspiring Irish athletes seeking to transition from Gaelic football to Australian rules.
Alongside fellow Irishman Mark O’Connor, Tuohy became the second and third Irish players to win an AFL Premiership, following in the footsteps of Tadhg Kennelly in 2005. Both Irishmen were integral to Geelong’s Premiership triumph in 2022.
In reflecting on his career and the incredible journey that has spanned 15 years since leaving home, Tuohy expressed gratitude for the support he’s received from fans and teammates alike.
“While there is a lot of footy left to play this year, I want to take this opportunity to thank all the members and fans for their support,” Tuohy said. “I knew when I came to the Cats I was in for a treat, but I didn’t fully appreciate just how incredible the journey would be.”
Geelong Cats General Manager of Football, Andrew Mackie, paid tribute to Tuohy’s contributions both on and off the field.
“Zach has been a skilful, durable, and flexible player across his eight seasons in the hoops. He will depart as the Irish games record holder, which is a remarkable achievement for someone who made the decision 15 years ago to leave home to travel across the world to play our game,” Mackie said.
“He is a loved and respected teammate and has contributed greatly to the environment of our club. We thank Zach, his wife Rebecca, and children Flynn and Rafferty for their contribution to our club.”
As Tuohy prepares for his final AFL campaign in 2024, the Cats will continue to celebrate his remarkable career and his unwavering dedication to the game he embraced far from home.
