The Sydney Roosters solidified their future on Monday, August 19, announcing that Connor Watson and Spencer Leniu have both signed two-year contract extensions, ensuring their places with the club until the end of the 2027 NRL Premiership season.
Watson, 28, a versatile veteran who debuted with the Roosters in 2016, has spent the bulk of his career with the club, aside from a three-year stint with the Newcastle Knights from 2018 to 2021. With 141 top-grade appearances, including 75 with the Roosters, Watson expressed his pride in continuing with the club he calls home.
“I’m happy and proud to extend my future with the Roosters. This club means a lot to me, and so do the people in it,” Watson said Monday. “I’m excited to keep working with such a talented group of players and staff, and I’m ready to bring my best every day.”
Leniu, 23, who joined the Roosters ahead of the 2024 season, has quickly become a key asset for the team. A powerful forward with three premierships already under his belt from his time with the Penrith Panthers, Leniu also made his State of Origin debut for the New South Wales Blues this year.
“It’s felt like home since day one,” said Leniu. “I’m excited about what the future holds and committed to working hard with Trent [Robinson] and my teammates to keep doing my job for the team.”
The Roosters, currently third on the ladder with three rounds remaining in the NRL season, are hoping to cap off 2024 with their 16th Grand Final victory. However, with key players set to depart after the season—including Joseph Suaali’i, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joseph Manu, Luke Keary, and Sitili Tupouniua—retaining core players like Watson and Leniu is seen as a major win for the club.
The Roosters are strong contenders heading into the finals, with top bookmakers currently offering odds of $3.75 for them to claim another NRL Premiership.
