Essendon defender Jake Kelly has surprised many by announcing his retirement after 11 seasons in the AFL, having played for both Adelaide and Essendon.
Jake Kelly, the son of Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly, was initially drafted by Adelaide in the 2015 Rookie Draft with Pick 40. An Oakleigh Chargers product, he quickly became a key player for the Crows, featuring in 24 games during the 2017 season, including the grand final against Richmond.
In pursuit of a return to Victoria, Kelly transferred to Essendon in 2022. Over his 168-game career, Kelly played various roles and feels that now is the right moment to move on.
Kelly expressed gratitude to both the Adelaide and Essendon Football Clubs, thanking them for the opportunities and support he received throughout his career. He praised the quality of people at Essendon and expressed confidence in the club’s future.
Essendon GM Daniel McPherson acknowledged Kelly’s significant contribution to both clubs and commended his courageous decision to retire. He highlighted Kelly’s 168-game career, including a grand final appearance, as a noteworthy achievement.
Kelly will depart Essendon alongside other players, including Dyson Heppell, Nick Hind, Jaiden Hunter, Kaine Baldwin, and Tex Wanganeen.
