Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has added to the speculation about Essendon forward Jake Stringer’s potential move, as the player faces a tense contract dispute with the Bombers. With Stringer reportedly unhappy with Essendon’s offer of just a one-year extension, McGuire has suggested that Collingwood could make a bold move to recruit the 30-year-old star.

Stringer, who scored 42 goals in 23 games this season, has proven his value on the field, even while playing without a secure contract. Despite activating a clause that guarantees his spot at Essendon in 2025, the club’s hesitation to offer a longer-term deal has fueled uncertainty about his future.

Although Stringer is loyal to Essendon, he is seeking more stability, likely in the form of a two-year contract. On the “Eddie and Jimmy” podcast, McGuire discussed the potential upside of adding Stringer to Collingwood’s squad, likening him to Jordan De Goey—explosive but injury-prone—while acknowledging off-field concerns around fitness and professionalism.

McGuire speculated that if Stringer joined Collingwood, the club could take a calculated risk in pursuit of a premiership, even if it led to tough seasons afterward. He also noted that other clubs, such as the Sydney Swans, are showing interest in Stringer as Essendon holds firm on their offer. With Collingwood dealing with injuries in their forward line, including Brody Mihocek’s limited availability, Stringer could provide much-needed offensive depth.

Collingwood’s current president, Jeff Browne, has reiterated the club’s strategy of strengthening the team through trades and free agency, rather than relying on drafts. As Stringer evaluates his options, whether to stay at Essendon or start fresh with a new team like Sydney or another Victorian rival, the upcoming weeks are sure to draw more attention.
