Essendon Coach Released from Hospital After Shocking Bike Accident

Essendon AFL coach James Hird has been discharged from the hospital in good spirits following a cycling accident that left him severely concussed. After a fall caused by wet conditions while riding home from training on Monday afternoon, Hird experienced confusion and disorientation but has now been cleared of any serious injuries.

The 42-year-old was closely monitored overnight at the hospital, where medical staff conducted thorough assessments. Fortunately, they confirmed there were no fractures, allowing him to return home to rest. Essendon officials anticipate that Hird will be fit to travel with the team for their match against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. A final decision regarding his participation will be made on Wednesday, pending further evaluation by team doctor Bruce Reid.

“He’s feeling pretty good this morning,” said Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell in an interview with Fox Sports. “Last night was understandably confusing for him, but he’s doing well enough to go home now. The doctors have completed extensive tests, and they feel confident about his recovery. Everything points to him being ready for Friday, but we’ll confirm that after he meets with Dr. Reid.”

Hird’s wife, Tania, shared that her husband had been feeling “very dopey” and “very sore” during her visit to the hospital. However, she noted that he was able to communicate by the time they left. “It’s great news that there are no fractures. He was definitely feeling out of it, but he was talking and seemed to be improving,” she remarked.

Reflecting on Hird’s cycling habits, she mentioned that he enjoys riding for exercise and mental clarity, but after this incident, she advised against cycling in rainy conditions. “I told him it might be best to avoid wet-weather riding from now on. It’s safer to take the car,” she said.

As Hird recuperates, the Essendon community remains hopeful for his swift recovery and return to the sidelines, where he has built a reputation for resilience and leadership. The upcoming match is expected to be crucial, and having their coach back in action would provide a significant boost to the Bombers as they prepare for a challenging encounter.
