The Milwaukee Brewers have one of the most sought-after assets on the trade market this offseason, and they should capitalize on it.

Last winter, they traded right-hander Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles and received notable players like Joey Ortiz and DL Hall, both of whom made contributions in the 2024 season.

Now, the Brewers might explore a deal with another American League East team that has the prospect talent to entice Milwaukee’s front office.

The Boston Red Sox, after losing Kenley Jansen in free agency, are in dire need of a high-leverage reliever. Fortunately, they have one of the strongest farm systems in Major League Baseball to help them improve their bullpen.

In 2024, the Red Sox bullpen posted a collective 4.39 ERA, ranking 24th in the league. If they’re serious about upgrading, Milwaukee’s Devin Williams could be the answer.

Williams finished the season with a 1.25 ERA, striking out 38 batters while walking 11, holding opponents to a .133 batting average, and posting a 0.97 WHIP in 21 2/3 innings across 22 appearances.

Set to become a free agent after the 2025 season, Williams might be dealt by Milwaukee while his value remains high.

In return, the Brewers could target one of Boston’s top prospects, as their farm system includes six players in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, many of whom are nearing MLB readiness and could contribute by 2025.

Additionally, the Red Sox have a number of breakout left-handed hitters from last season, such as Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran, who might be available as Boston’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, has expressed interest in balancing the lineup.

The Red Sox could afford to part with one of their rising stars, but it remains to be seen whether they will, as the organization has recently focused on building up its young talent. However, after several years of struggling, the front office may be prepared to make a bold move.

Both teams possess what the other needs, making a trade beneficial for each side.
