The Los Angeles Chargers are in need of help at wide receiver to avoid wasting a prime year of Justin Herbert under Jim Harbaugh’s leadership. One potential solution could be found locally in Los Angeles Rams wideout Cooper Kupp.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, teams have begun inquiring about Kupp, and Dianna Russini from The Athletic reports that the Rams may be willing to absorb part of his contract to facilitate a trade. If true, the Chargers should be intrigued, given Kupp’s cap hits of $29.8 million and $27.3 million in 2025 and 2026. The Rams might even cover some of the $29.8 million cap hit for 2024, given there’s a potential out in Kupp’s contract after this season.
Acquiring Kupp would likely make him a half-season rental, with the Chargers needing to part with at least a third-round pick. Kupp, 31, would be a major asset for Herbert, especially with rookie Ladd McConkey on the roster. However, Kupp hasn’t played a full season since 2021, when he posted an incredible 1,900 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Given his recent injury history, the Chargers might find more guaranteed value in other trade options, while preserving their draft capital as they reshape the team to Harbaugh’s vision. This brings up the possibility of reacquiring Mike Williams via trade as an alternative.
