The Pittsburgh Steelers secured an impressive Week 7 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football, improving their record to 5-2 and positioning themselves as a strong contender in the AFC.
While Pittsburgh’s offense has been inconsistent through the first six games, they’ve posted back-to-back 30-point performances, showing signs of momentum—especially following Russell Wilson’s debut.
The running game, spearheaded by Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, has been highly efficient and is becoming the team’s offensive identity. However, the receiving group has been underwhelming. Outside of George Pickens, production is lacking, and the Steelers may need to address this before the trade deadline.
Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker has suggested Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp as a potential trade target. If the Rams’ Les Snead is open to dealing Kupp, Pittsburgh could be an ideal destination, as the Steelers have struggled offensively in Arthur Smith’s first year as play-caller, particularly in the passing game. They rank 13th in EPA per play and receiving grade, with no solid No. 2 option to complement Pickens.
GM Omar Khan has explored options to strengthen the receiving corps over the past year, but efforts to acquire top talents like Brandon Aiyuk and Davante Adams have fallen short. Kupp could be the solution they need.
However, there are concerns about trading for Kupp. Injuries have limited him to just 23 of 51 possible games since 2022, and at 31, he’s approaching the end of his prime. Still, Khan should weigh the benefits. Kupp, with three 90+ reception seasons and excellent route-running, could be the ideal complement to Pickens and a reliable target for Wilson.
According to reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Mike Silver, and Jourdan Rodrigue, the Rams are seeking a second-round pick for Kupp, and they’re open to covering part of his 2024 salary. While a trade for Cooper Kupp would involve risk, it might be a key move for the Steelers if they hope to compete for their seventh championship.
