Red Sox Avoid Major Setback as Walker Buehler Recovers from Illness

The Boston Red Sox have dealt with multiple health concerns in their starting rotation this spring, but the latest scare involving Walker Buehler appears to be minor. The newly signed right-hander was unexpectedly scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, raising immediate concerns about a possible injury. However, the team quickly provided reassurance, confirming that Buehler was dealing with a stomach virus rather than anything serious.

Red Sox Provide Health Update on Buehler

Buehler was set to take the mound but was replaced by Cooper Criswell just hours before the game. Given Boston’s existing rotation issues, fans feared the worst. However, manager Alex Cora put those worries to rest, revealing that Buehler was simply under the weather and is already improving.

“He’s sick,” Cora told reporters, including Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo. “Hopefully, tomorrow, he’ll pitch on the back fields. He said he was feeling better. I was like, ‘Stay away from this and stay away from the clubhouse.’ The goal is for him to have six up-and-downs tomorrow. He’ll be ready for Game 3.”

This update means Buehler is still on track to make his regular-season Red Sox debut in the third game of the season against the defending champion Texas Rangers.

Buehler’s Encouraging Spring Performance

Buehler, 30, was one of Boston’s key offseason acquisitions, expected to play a major role in stabilizing the rotation. He made three official starts this spring, pitching 10 innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out 11. Given that he is coming off a challenging 2024 season after returning from Tommy John surgery, his solid spring performance has been an encouraging sign for Red Sox fans.

Why Buehler’s Return is Critical for Boston

The Red Sox have already been hit hard by injuries, with Lucas Giolito, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford all set to miss time to start the season. Losing Buehler, even briefly, would have created another major obstacle for Boston’s pitching staff. Fortunately, with his illness not expected to linger, he should be ready to go when needed.

Looking Ahead to Opening Series vs. Rangers

If all goes as planned, Buehler will take the mound in Game 3 of the season against a tough Texas Rangers lineup. With their rotation already stretched thin, the Red Sox need him healthy and performing at his best.

While a last-minute scratch always raises concerns, Boston avoided a worst-case scenario with Buehler. Now, the focus shifts back to preparing for Opening Day and hoping for better injury luck as the season begins.
