The Boston Red Sox might not be at full strength when Opening Day arrives, as injuries and setbacks continue to impact their roster. Several key players could be sidelined when the 2025 season begins, forcing the team to make early adjustments.

Pitching Concerns

It has already been confirmed that pitchers Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford won’t be ready for Opening Day. Bello appears to be progressing faster than Crawford, but neither will be available when the season kicks off. Losing two key arms from the rotation is a tough blow for Boston, especially as they look to establish consistency early in the year.

Abreu’s Uncertain Status

Another potential absence is outfielder Wilyer Abreu, who has been dealing with an illness throughout spring training. His recovery timeline remains unclear, and there’s a chance he won’t be ready for Opening Day. If he can’t go, the Red Sox will have to adjust their outfield depth.

Yoshida’s Injury Setback

Now, another big name could be joining them on the Injured List. According to The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey, Masataka Yoshida might not be ready for the start of the season as he continues recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

“Masataka Yoshida is still building up his throwing progression after offseason shoulder surgery, but is only throwing at 60 feet,” McCaffrey reported. “He’s appeared in spring games at DH, but at this point, a likely scenario entails him starting the season on the IL with Devers at DH.”

The Red Sox had plans to give Yoshida more time in the outfield this year, but his recovery has been slower than expected. While he’s making progress, his throwing limitations could keep him off the field for the start of the season.

Offensive Outlook

The good news is that Yoshida remains healthy at the plate. He has appeared in six Spring Training games, hitting .263 with four RBIs. However, he has yet to collect an extra-base hit or a walk. While his numbers aren’t eye-catching, the fact that he’s swinging the bat regularly is a positive sign.

Looking Ahead

Yoshida is entering the third season of his five-year, $90 million contract with the Red Sox. Despite offseason trade rumors, he remains with the team. Now, the question is how the Red Sox will manage his role, especially if he starts the season on the Injured List.

If Yoshida, Abreu, Bello, and Crawford are all unavailable for Opening Day, Boston will need to rely on its depth early on. With multiple key players potentially sidelined, the team will be tested right from the start.
